Goal | Changing the Way We Care (CTWWC) promotes safe, nurturing family care for children reintegrating from residential care facilities (often referred to as orphanages) and prevents child-family separation by strengthening families, reforming national systems of care for children, and working to shift donor and volunteer support away from residential care and toward family care alternatives. |
Objectives | CTWWC initiative is organized around three main strategic objectives: (1) Governments promote family care; (2) Children stay in or return to safe and nurturing families; and (3) Key stakeholders make meaningful commitments toward family care. |
Intervention Areas | Four CTWWC team in Kanyakumari District (Kottar, Kuzhithurai, Thukkalay and Marthandam) are working with 1438 vulnerable children in 64 villages. A total of 1438 children from 996 vulnerable families have been identified for close monitoring and care. |
In Tamil Nadu, the CTWWC project was initiated in 2021 with a focus on using virtual monitoring and facilitation of linkages with government and church-based schemes for family strengthening of vulnerable at-risk children and their families, and to build capacities of families to retain children under parental care. Having realized the importance of faith engagement through our project, the following efforts were taken
Four CTWWC team in Kanyakumari District (Kottar, Kuzhithurai, Thuckalay and Marthandam) are working with 1438 vulnerable children in 64 villages. A total of 1438 children from 996 vulnerable families have been identified for close monitoring and care.
Through rigorous ranking based on established vulnerability criteria based on parental/care situation of the children, economic situation of the families and status of their shelter, health and education issues, the 4 Districts have chosen 120 children to take up for Individual Case Management to address more severely affected families. Case Management SOP was developed and all staff (POs, SCMs and FCMs) was given training on Child protection terminology, Staff Behavior toward children – Dos and don’ts, Guiding principles and Steps of the Case Management forms. They were also oriented on the required forms and templates, documentation and reporting process.
1882 key influencing Community Based Organizations supported by CTWWC to engage in care reform.
The CTWWC team conducted a session for 3645 community members on family values, role of parents and family strengthening. 20300 people reached through mass media awareness rising messaging on care reform in demonstration areas.
Children’s Day, International Family Day, National Girl Child Day were observed and key messaging on family strengthening was discussed with the stakeholders. Information, Education and Communication materials were distributed to reach the primary and secondary stakeholders.
TASOSS program team interacted with government officers at the Nagercoil District Collectorate – the District Child Protection Officer, the District Social Welfare Officer, the district Child Welfare Committee to introduce them to the CTWWC project and staff members.
A two-day training program on government welfare schemes and linkages available for vulnerable children for the Case management staff on April 2023, including the DCPO, the DSWO, the CWC Chairperson, the DDRO (District Disability Rehabilitation Officer) and the OSC (One Staff Centre) presenting on behalf of their departments enables the team to do appropriate referrals to the vulnerable families. 936 government staff participated in awareness raising activities on care reform and/or alternative care.
US Director Ms. Berth Bradford visited the intervention areas on 17th to 18th Nov 2022 Nov 2022, met Champions and the vulnerable families.
